SOURCES OF TRANSPLANTED ORGANS
- Live donors (relatives up to 4th degree)
- Cadavers
In most countries there is a shortage of suitable organs for transplantation because the transplantation needs are not met by organ donations. Currently in our country there are more than 40000 patients living with dialysis (unfortunately most of them are young and middle age between 20-40 years old). They can survive with dialysis machine for 3 times a week and daily 3-4 hours. This has restrictive and detrimental effect on their social life. After renal transplantation they become free from all these restrictions and their survival rate increase. Patients with advanced heart and liver disease are in more dismal condition since there are no auxiliary treatment options such as dialysis so their survival rate is low.
IS ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION A GOOD TREATMENT?
By means of organ transplantation lifespan becomes longer and life quality increases with having lower cost comparing the treatment used for end stage organ deficiencies such as dialysis. Therefore organ donation is an important contribution to humanity not only in health outcomes but also in economic consequences for all countries. Additionally patients dependency decreases and loss of workforce becomes the benefit.
We have patients who had kidney transplantations 20 years ago. Their achievements from that times to date can not be compared to any kind of happiness, even can be told from their side as
''miracle''… They have stepped into new relations, they have families and their own businesses thus
''adopted to life in every sense''. It is possible to give many different examples for the other organ transplantations as well. Organ transplantation is a good treatment option for the patients having advanced heart, liver and kidney diseases.
IN WHICH DISEASES ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION IS A NECESSARY TREATMENT?
Organ transplantation is a necessary treatment when the organs become dysfunctional and there is no other medical treatment except transplantation. Currently it is the only treatment to cure patients having chronic and irreversible damage in their organs.
HAVE A LOOK AT THE TIMELINE OF THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL ORGAN TRANSPLANTATIONS PERFORMED IN TURKEY
In 1975 –Kidney transplantation from live donor
In 1978 - Kidney transplantation from cadaver
In 1988 - Liver transplantation from cadaver
In 1989 – First successful heart transplantation
In 1990 – Partial liver transplantation from relative
In1991 – Heart valve transplantation
In 1998 – Liver transplantation from cadaver for 2 patients
In 1979 National Organ Transplant Act numbered 2238 about "TAKING, STORING AND TRANSPLANTATION OF ORGANS AND TISSUES" has been effectuated and it was amended in 1982.
WHAT IS BRAIN DEATH? IS IT DIFFERENT FROM VEGETATIVE STATE?
Brain death is a legal definition of death that refers to the irreversible loss of brain activities. It is not possible to take organs before brain dead. It should not be confused with a coma or vegetative state. In brain death brain activities has been lost totally and irreversible. Cardiopulmonary functions can be continued by artificial ventilation and cardiac support but it is not possible for brain functions. Some of the patients in coma or vegetative state may return to life but this is not the case for the patients with brain death. Therefore brain death is a medical and legal definition of death. Patients with brain death and having permission for organ donation are called cadaver donor. Organs from cadaver donor should be taken as soon as possible for transplantation to the patients on transplantation list.
Definition of the death operated by a team including neurologist, neurosurgeon, cardiologist and anesthesia/reanimation specialist, after required tests. This is an independent team in which there is no one from transplantation team.
CAN DONATED ORGANS BE SOLD OR GIVEN IN EXCHANGE FOR INTEREST?
It is forbidden by Law numbered 2238 that organs shall not be donated against remuneration. Organs from cadaver shall be transplanted to recipient with having highest compatibility through National Coordination System.
IS ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION SUITABLE FOR RELIGION?
Islam religion is clear about organ transplantation without any doubt and it is said that saving life is a merit.
Directorate of Religious Affairs describes the organ transplantation as one of the best aid between the people. It has been declared that it was religiously permissible with Directive dated 6.3.1980 and numbered 396. This directive is valid and applicable in all Muslim countries and for the other religions.
All religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism accept the organ transplantation is a part of human love and they support the efforts on this issue with special contributions for organ donation.
In Koran (Maide Sura, Verse 32) it has been declared that
"GIVING LIFE TO SOMEBODY MEANS GIVING LIFE ALL PEOPLE".
YOU CAN STILL BE ELIGIBLE TO DONATE YOUR ORGANS, EVEN IF YOU HAVE SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS;
Even elderly patients or the patients who have chronic health problems can donate several organs to compatible recipients. For example a patient 70 years old may have functional kidneys.
BECOMING A LIVING ORGAN DONOR MEANS ;
Donation of one healthy kidney or a part of a healthy liver from a living human being to another needy one is called a living donation. In these donations there is no evidence that live organ donors have detrimental effect on their health. The risk of donor is the same with that of recipient as operational risk.

Organ transplantation is the most effective treatment method used in patients with terminal organ failure for whom it is not possible to treat due to various reasons. In Turkey, organ transplantation operations have started gaining widespread acceptance with the first successful kidney transplantation performed in the year 1975.
Presently, patients who cannot regain their health by means of other treatment methods get a second chance thanks to organ transplantations, and their quality of life is sustained together with that of their families. In Turkey, kidney transplantation is possible by using the organ of a relative up to the 4th degree who is also a donor.
