Pet / CT

As the most improved method in diagnosis and treatment follow-up of cancer, PET/CT combines in a single system both a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and an Computerized Tomography so that images acquired from both devices can be taken sequentially, in the same session from the patient and combined into a single superposed image. While PET (Positron Emission Tomography) gives information about cell function and metabolism CT provides anatomical information. In a single session it can be obtained a 3 dimensional image giving precise information about metabolic function and anatomic structures of the cells. Thus obtaining reliable data about the patient condition allows to chose the best treatment for patients with cancer. In our Oncology Hospital by means of PET/CT it is possible to be detected in all sizes of tumors including small ones.

What is the difference between PET/CT and PET?

PET scanner can describe metabolism of the tumor foci and detect the small tumors. However without CT it is not sufficient to be located the tumors. Moreover PET/CT devices are faster than PET device and it is designed larger than PET for patients having claustrophobia.

In which diseases PET/CT is used?

  • In diagnosis, staging (determination of spreading) and of treatment response evaluation of oncologic diseases
  • After heart attack to determine the vital tissues in heart muscle
  • In neurology to detect the foci of epilepsy
  • Early diagnosis of diseases such as Alzheimer disease.
Effects of Radiotherapy planning on treatment outcomes
Radiotherapy planning with PET/CT device has become gold standard worldwide. It allows to be defined exactly target tumor tissues for effective irradiation and prevention of normal tissues.

How PET/CT is used?

After 45 min-1 hour drug injection the patient is placed into the PET-CT device, usually lying in a supine position with his/her arms resting at the sides, or brought together above the head, depending on the main region of interest. Scanning lasts approximately 35 – 45 minutes.

Advantages of PET/CT?

  • Allow to diagnosis cancer cells accurately at early stage.
  • Allow to detect recurrence at early stage.
  • Obtaining images with high quality and resolution.
  • Patient comfort due to short scanning time.
  • Effective irradiation of the tumor and prevention of surrounding normal tissues.
