General Info

Organ Transplantation

Our Organ Transplant Centres provide advanced medical services with state-of-the-art technology and experienced teams, achieving high patient and organ survival rates for both adult and paediatric patients. The centres specialise in kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants.

Types of Transplants Offered

We successfully perform:

  • Kidney Transplants: From live or cadaveric donors for patients of all age groups.
  • Liver Transplants: From live or cadaveric donors.
  • Pancreas Transplants: From cadaveric donors.

Expertise and Facilities

Our centres are staffed by:

  • Skilled organ transplant surgeons.
  • Specialists in adult and paediatric nephrology and gastroenterology.
  • Organ transplant coordinators.

Post-operative care is provided in separate intensive care units for adult and paediatric patients, ensuring tailored treatment and monitoring.

The centres are equipped to perform advanced post-transplant procedures, including:

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in the gastroenterology clinic.
  • Interventional radiology procedures performed by expert physicians.

Importance of Organ Transplants

Organ transplantation is the most effective treatment for end-stage organ failure. For transplanted organs to function optimally over the long term, post-operative care and lifestyle changes are essential. Close monitoring is critical for:

  • Early detection of complications.
  • Managing the effects of medications.
  • Maintaining the health of the transplanted organ.

Organs and Tissues for Transplant

The most commonly transplanted organs and tissues include:

  • Organs: Kidney, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestines.
  • Tissues: Bone marrow, corneas, and bones.

Organ Donors

Organ donations come from:

  • Live donors: Often relatives up to the fourth degree.
  • Cadaveric donors: Deceased individuals with organ suitability, such as those with brain death due to head trauma.

For example:

  • The corneas and kidneys from a brain-dead individual can restore sight and save patients with chronic kidney disease.
  • The liver can save patients with cirrhosis or acute liver failure.

Transplant Candidates

Transplants are recommended for patients with end-stage organ failure (heart, liver, kidney). Age is not a strict limitation; the patient’s general health and the absence of severe chronic conditions are the key factors.

Patients undergo thorough evaluation, and transplant eligibility is determined by a multidisciplinary council. Even patients with conditions like diabetes or hepatitis B/C may be eligible for kidney transplants.

In cases where donors are incompatible due to blood type or immunological issues, paired exchange transplantation allows matching with another compatible donor-recipient pair.

Benefits of Organ Transplantation

Organ transplantation is a life-changing procedure. It:

  • Increases life expectancy.
  • Improves quality of life.
  • Allows patients to reconnect with life and activities they value.

Religious Perspective on Organ Donation

The Directorate of Religious Affairs in Turkey has declared organ donation permissible, describing it as one of the highest forms of humanitarian aid. This is documented in a decision dated 6 March 1980, numbered 396.
